Govindappa Venkataswamy (1 October 1918 – 7 July 2006) prominently known as 'Dr V.' was an Indian ophthalmologist who committed his life to kill unnecessary visual deficiency. He was the originator and previous director of Aravind Eye Hospitals. He is best known for building up a top notch, high volume, ease administration conveyance model that has reestablished sight to a great many individuals. Since origin, Aravind Eye Care System (an enlisted non-benefit association) has seen more than 55 million patients, and performed over 6.8 million surgeries.[1] Over half of the association's patients pay either nothing or profoundly financed rates. Its scale and self-maintainability provoked a 1993 Harvard Business Case Study on the Aravind model.[3]

Venkataswamy was forever injured by rheumatoid joint pain at age 30. He prepared as an ophthalmologist, and by and by performed more than 100,000 eye surgeries. As an administration worker he created and pioneer the idea of eye camps and got a Padma Shri from the Government of India in 1973.

In 1992, Venkataswamy and accomplices of Aravind established Aurolab, a globally guaranteed assembling office that brought the cost of the intraocular focal point down to one-tenth of universal costs, making it reasonable for creating countries. Today, Aurolab makes ophthalmic pharmaceuticals, instruments and hardware, notwithstanding intraocular focal points, and fares to 160 nations around the world. In 1996, under Venkataswamy's authority, the Lions Aravind Institute for Community Ophthalmology (LAICO) was founded.[8] LAICO is a preparation and counseling foundation that has duplicated the Aravind model in 347 medical clinics crosswise over India and 30 other creating nations.
