During the 1940s there was a long felt requirement for an undeniable school in the Head Quarters of West Godavari District. This need was satisfied when late Sri Rao Saheb Damaraju Venkata Rao, the then Chairman of the Municipal Council, Eluru, stepped up to the plate in 1944. The Municipal Council under his stewardship enrolled the compassion and backing of the magnanimous residents in and around Eluru and set out on an accumulation drive and stored Rs. 2 lakh 17 thousand in the Municipal Treasury as a reserved store for the beginning of the school. The school was initiated on fourth July 1945 by Sir Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy , the recognized educationist and the then Vice-chancellor, Andhra University and the school was named after him " Sir C.R. Reddy Municipal College". It began working as a second grade school, with Sri D.S. Subrahmanyam as the Founder Principal.A constitution was received for the Governing Body in the year 1947, as indicated by which "Metropolitan" was dropped from the first name of the College. The name of the College was treated as an organization under Private Management by the Government from 1947. The school was raised to the status of First Grade with impact from July 1951 when the University allowed alliance for B.Sc.,Physics(Main)and B.Com.,Courses .The College was conceded further connection in Degree Courses for B.A. (Arithmetic) and B.A., which were begun in July 1954.In understanding with the suggestions of the Secondary Education Commission, the Andhra University chose to abrogate the Intermediate Course and the Two Year Degree Course and presented rather One Year Pre-University Course which was to be trailed by a Multi year Degree Course. Subsequently the school opened the Pre-University Course with impact from July 1957 and Three Year Degree Course from June 1958.
