The institution was established in the `60s by eminent educationists and social workers who joined hands to set up an educational society under the name of` Sadhana Education Society.In June 1962, this College of Education was established and came to be known as the `Sadhana School of Educational Research and Training`. In 1977 it was renamed as `Smt. Kapila Khandvala Institution of Education` to honor and commemorate the memory of Smt. Kapilaben Khandvala, an eminent personality in the field of Education. The College is a recognized Gujarati linguistic minority institution.“It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness” was the motto of the founders Shri Vishnuprasad Desai, the then Mayor of Bombay, Shri C. M. Trivedi, Smt. Kapila Khandvala and Dr. Madhuri Shah, whose sincerity of purpose in the face of odds did not deter them from working towards the cause of education.Later, philanthropists, industrialists, industrialists, social workers, etc. Shri Jayant Dalal, Shri G.L. Raheja, Shri C.L. Raheja, Shri Hans Bougra, to name a few. But it became the invisible pillar on which the Sadhana Education Society flourished, expanded and developed. There are three faculties: the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Commerce, and the Faculty of Education.This institution has had the privilege of being led by eminent educationists like Smt. Kapila Khandvala, Smt. Madhuri Shah and Dr. Jyoti Trivedi (ex-Vice Chancellor of S.N.D.T. University), all known for their commitment and conviction to the cause of teacher education. The institution has been led by very able and dedicated Principals since its inception.In 2023, the institution had the opportunity to interact with scholars from the University of Technology, Sydney – Ms. Heather Goodall, Ms. Helen Randerson & Ms. Devleena Ghosh who visited KKCE to interact with the faculty to gain more insight about our founder Smt. Kapilaben Khandvala as they were in the process of writing a book on Kapilaben.The college believes in linking with several reputed organizations within the country and across the world. Very recently, KKCE has signed an MOU with Gordon Academic College of Education, Haiffa Israel.

The Placement Cell of KKCE was established in the year 2005-06 with the aim of providing job opportunities to the students of this college in reputed institutions and in turn supply quality teachers to the society. The Placement Cell operates through the Student Placement Committee consisting of Faculty and Student Representatives. It takes focused and continuous efforts for the purpose of Placement. The Cell motivates and prepares students for interviews in prospective Institutions. To achieve this objective, careful and systematic preparations are initiated and maintained. The University Counseling Office was established to promote the mental health of KKCE families. The cells are housed in separate cabins on the university grounds. The college has well equipped language lab with desktops with accessories and words worth software which is a popular software for English language learning. The college is one of the oldest institutions to have its own full-fledged computer lab with all the latest softwares. The lab is equipped to cater to 20 students at any given time and has full time technical assistant. It’s a browsing centre with excellent WIFI connectivity.

Mathematics lab

The Maths lab has several teaching aids as well as manipulatives that can generate interest in mathematics and develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. The lab associates with Navnirmiti Eduqualiy, Mumbai which is an organization for production of low cost teaching aids for maths and science education.

Science Lab

The science lab has several teaching aids, equipments and chemicals as per different board syllabus are available in the lab for scientific experiments. The student teachers can issue those for their practice teaching lessons in the schools. The lab also has a mobile lab where student teachers can conduct their experiments.

Psychology lab

The psychology lab is well equipped with valuable collection of psychological and educational tests and apparatus. Several paper pencil tests that are now popular are also included in the lab. Some of the psychological tests like teacher aptitude tests, teacher attitude tests and personality tests such as 16 PF are specifically useful for teacher profiling. The lab is useful for the counselor and our research students.
