The National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (NIHFW), was set up on ninth March, 1977 by the merger of two national level establishments, viz. the National Institute of Health Administration and Education (NIHAE) and the National Institute of Family Planning (NIFP). The NIHFW, a self-ruling association, under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, goes about as a 'pinnacle specialized foundation' just as a 'might suspect tank' for the advancement of wellbeing and family welfare programs in the nation. 

The Institute tends to a wide scope of issues on wellbeing and family welfare from an assortment of viewpoints through the divisions of Communication, Community Health Administration, Education and Training, Epidemiology, Management Sciences, Medical Care and Hospital Administration, Population Genetics and Human Development, Planning and Evaluation, Reproductive Bio-Medicine, Statistics and Demography and Social Sciences.
