Why Baselius College?

Our College was established in the year 1964 by a galaxy of eminent men to fulfil the long cherished dream of the Malankara Orthodox Christian Community to dedicate themselves to the service of God and man. This premier postgraduate institution that flourished from the precincts of the MD Seminary High School perpetuates the sacred memory of our heavenly patron His Holiness Baselius Geevarghese II, the late lamented Catholicos of the East, who steered the destiny of the Orthodox Church with grace and vision for more than three decades.

The infant institution was given liberal shelter by the M.D. Seminary High School in its classrooms. The first manager, the late lamented H.G. Mathews Mar Ivanios Metropolitan of Kottayam and the first Principal, the late Dr A.P. Mani, and the members of the Governing Board took a personal interest in the development of the college. Only Pre-degree courses were offered then. In the year 1966, this junior college was upgraded and degree courses were started. It was indeed a milestone in the growth of the college. By and by, classrooms were made available for housing the various batches and classes. Academic honours followed one after another. The college soon made an impressive name in sports and games too. New structures sprang up as a result of generous contributions made by the public and with the financial assistance from the management. The college was then under a single management. Later it was brought under the Educational Agency of the MOC Colleges in 1979 and His Grace Daniel Mar Philexinos took over the reins as the Corporate Manager.

After H.G. Mar Philexinos’ demise, H.G. Mathews Mar Barnabas and later H.G. Philipose Mar Eusebius and still later H.G. Dr Yakob Mar Irenaios took up the charge of Corporate Managers. H.G. Kuriakose Mar Clemis Metropolitan under whose able stewardship the college set new benchmarks for excellence stepped down from office recently. Currently, the mantle is on H.G. Dr Thomas Mar Athanasius under whose stewardship, the College is all set to scale greater heights.

During the last Fifty-three years of its illustrious existence, the college could produce brilliant academicians, administrators, politicians and also sports prodigies who represented our nation in international tournaments. It is now poised for meeting the challenges of the 21st century. The college now offers Undergraduate programmes in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Malayalam, Commerce, Zoology, Botany, English, Economics, Politics and Business administration& Post-Graduate courses in English, Commerce, Economics, Physics and Chemistry and also a Research Programme in English leading to the award of PhD. With the starting of B.Com (Office Management and Secretarial Practice) in 1996, the college entered a new phase of vocationalisation of education.
