The out break of decimating epiphytotic dark colored spot illness of rice (Helminthosporium spp) in 1942 in the then Bengal Province (the regions of which are presently in the territory of West Bengal in India and Bangladesh brought about a genuine deficiency of rice. Added to this, the disappointment of the common organization to adapt to such an appalling circumstance finished in what was known as the Great Bengal Famine of 1943. With this foundation, the Central Government, in the year 1944, chose to increase inquire about on all part of rice crop. In 1945, the Government of India chose to build up a focal Institute for rice look into. Therefore, the Central Rice Research Institute (CRRI) was arrangement on 23 April 1946 at Bidhyadharpur, Cuttack, Odisha with an exploratory homestead place that is known for 60 hectares given by Government of Orissa. Dr. K. Ramiah, a famous rice reproducer, as its originator Director. In this manner, in 1966, the authoritative control of the establishment was moved to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). 

The CRRI is one of the Institutes of the ICAR under the Division of Crop Sciences. The Institute has two research stations-Central Rainfed Upland Rice Research Station (CRURRS), Hazaribagh, in Jharkhand, and the Regional Rainfed Lowland Rice Research Station (RRLRRS), Gerua, in Assam. These examination stations were set up to handle the issues of rainfed uplands, and flood inclined rainfed marshes, separately. 

Two Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) likewise work under the CRRI and guided by the DDG (Agril. Expansion). These KVKs are situated at Santhapur, Cuttack and Jainagar, Koderma. 

Location:

The Central Rice Research Institute is situated in Cuttack in Odisha state (200N, 860E) at 24 meters above mean ocean level (MS1). The yearly precipitation at Cuttack is around 1200 – 1500 millimeters and is gotten for the most part during June-October (Kharif or Wet Season). Negligible precipitation is gotten between November to May (Rabi or Dry Season) from south-west rainstorm. The Institute is arranged around 35 kilometers from Bhubaneswar air terminal and around 7 kilometers south-east of Cuttack railroad station, on the Cuttack-Paradeep State Highway.
