Why College of Horticulture?

College of Horticulture About

The College of Horticulture was established in 1972 with the main objective of starting graduate programme in Horticulture and strengthening research and extension activities in Horticultural crops. B.Sc. (Hort.) degree programme was started with an intake of 20 students during 1972. The intake capacity was increased to 30 from 1976 and then to 40 from 1979. The B.Sc.(Ag.) programme was also introduced from 1977 with an intake of 50 students. The syllabi for the B.Sc. (Hort.) and B.Sc. (Ag.) programme were then integrated and the B.Sc. (Ag) programme alone was continued with the integrated syllabus. The intake capacity for the B.Sc. (Ag.) programme was subsequently raised to 75 and then to 90.

Post graudate programme was started in six disciplines from 1976 viz., M.Sc. (Hort.), M.Sc. (Ag.) in Agronomy, Agricultural Botany, Soil Science & Agrl. Chemistry, Agrl. Entomology and Plant Pathology. From 1979, Ph.D. programmes in the above disciplines were commenced. Subsequently, M.Sc. programmes were also started in Agrl. Economics, Agrl. Extension, Agrl. Meteorology, Agrl. Statistics and Home Science (Food Science and Nutrition).

Two post-graduate diploma courses of one year duration were conducted in Natural Rubber Production and Land Water Resources and Management from 1979 and 1980 respectively and subsequently discontinued.

Under the Manpower Development Scheme sponsored by the Coffee Board of India, the final year B.Sc. (Ag.) students were given special training in coffee cultivation and processing from 1984 to 1997.

A new diploma course of two-year duration in Natural Rubber Production was started in 1998 for the sponsored candidates from Tripura with the financial assistance of the Rubber Board, Kottayam.

The College activities were initially taken up in the Veterinary College Campus during 1972 at Mannuthy and later shifted to the KAU Main Campus, Vellanikkara in 1977. At present, the College functions in the academic blocks II and III while the academic block I is occupied with university administrative affairs. It has grown in many folds since its inception and has a very good academic record with excellent faculty. The faculty strives hard to attain excellence in teaching, research and extension in the field of Agriculture. It is one of the three Colleges of Agriculture, located centrally in Kerala.

Admission Process for College of Horticulture

Class 12th Board exams with 50% - 55 % aggregate mark in science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects)

B.Sc Horticulture Eligibility Criteria

  • All students interested in pursuing a BSc in Horticulture must meet the eligibility criteria for admission. You must meet the following BSc Horticulture eligibility criteria to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Horticulture:
  • Candidates must have completed a 10+2 Science programme that included Biology as one of the required subjects
  • A minimum of 55% in any science stream is required, with Biology as a required subject
  • Candidates must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 50% in class 12. This may differ from university to university
  • To be considered, candidates must be at least 27 years old. The maximum age limit varies by college, but it is typically between the ages of 21 and 24.
  • Note: Candidates must meet the required eligibility standards set by the colleges in order to be approved for BSc Horticulture admission to top institutions offering BSc Horticulture degree programmes.

College of Horticulture Facilities

Boys Hostel

The boys are accommodated in the Pamba Men’s Hostel. The hostels have spacious and comfortable rooms with extra guestrooms to accommodate guests. There are clean mess halls in which more than 100 people can dine at a time. Television sets have been provided with cable connections. The hostels enjoy round-the-clock telephone and security facilities also. The other facilities available are - A reading room with books and magazines for various competitive exams, vernacular and national newspapers, and other major periodicals. Round-the-clock working computer club. A well-equipped multi-purpose gym facility at the boys’ hostel. Indoor facilities for table tennis, caroms, chess, badminton, and for other outdoor games like football, volleyball, and basketball. Spacious garage for parking vehicles Facility for earning while learning the scheme.

Girls Hostel

The undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the College are residential in nature, and hence hostel facility is provided for bonafide students unless they are exempted on the ground that they are residing with their parents or guardians. The hostel Harsha accommodates UG girl students while Haritha accommodates PG girl students. Both are located 200m away from the College. Career Guidance and Students Placement Cell

The placement cell of College of Horticulture plays a crucial role in locating job opportunities for Under Graduates and Post Graduates passing out from the college by keeping in touch with reputed firms and industrial establishments. The Placement Cell operates round the year to facilitate contacts between companies and graduates. On invitation, many reputed industries visit the institute to conduct interviews.

The Placement Cell organizes career guidance programmes for all the students starting from first year. The cell arranges training programmes like Mock Interviews, Group Discussions, Communication Skills Workshop etc and it also organizes Public Sector Exam Training for students who are interested to join Government Sectors. The cell facilitates coaching for final year students for ICAR fellowships.

Every year the newly introduced students are given an orientation programme for a week regarding opportunities in agriculture sector. During this orientation session alumni from various sectors address the students to appraise them about various opportunities in agriculture sector
