Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health in Pune History

MIMH was established on March 18, 1991 at Sassoon General Hospital Campus, Pune. Dr. Mohan Agashe, then Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry, B.J.G.M.C., was instrumental in establishing this institute. The project, called STRIMHANS (National Institute for Mental Health and Neuroscience Training and Research), is led by Drs. Agashe he submitted to the Government of Maharashtra in 1989 seeking effective implementation of the National Mental Health Program. The institute provided post-disaster relief and psychosocial support to his 3,541 people affected by the 1993 'Kirari Earthquake' disaster. The institute was the nodal agency for implementing the National Mental Health Program in the state of Maharashtra. During the tenure of Dr. The Institute, headed by Alka Pawar, was recognized as a Center of Excellence in Mental Health by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India in 2009. The Institute continued to consolidate and expand under the leadership of Drs. Mr. Ajay Chandanwale launched various courses on mental health and built a new mental health complex at Pashan campus in Pune.
