Why Kerala Federation of the Blind?

Kerala Federation of the Blind is the largest self-help nonprofit charitable organization of the visually impaired in Kerala. Being the first of its kind in India, it was founded on 11 th September 1967. The Federation has played a pivotal role in creating an accessible society to the visually impaired in particular and the other disabled in general through its interventions for the socio-economic, cultural and educational empowerment and development of the disabled community. The Federation has been honored by various national and international agencies, various Government agencies and even the President of India on multiple occasions for its commendable performance in the sector. The federation is affiliated to All India Confederation of the Blind New Delhi and is thus connected to the Asian Blind Union and the World Blind Union.

In its nearly 6 decades of activism, the Federation has given recourse to all possible means such as agitations, legal battles, negotiations and even long standing struggles to attain its goals. The Federation at present have Committees in all fourteen districts of Kerala. The Federation have also different forums such as Students forum, Teachers forum, Youth Forum, Women’s forum, Lottery forum, and employee’s forum to promote the interests of the respective groups and to deal with their specific issues. The Federation runs two Schools for the Visually Impaired. HKCMM School for the blind at Karimpuzha Palakkad, and LBMM School for the Blind at Kudayathore Idukki. The Federation has also got two vocational training centres, the Vocational Training Centre for Visually impaired men, at Kundayithode Kozhikode and Vocational Training Centre for the visually impaired women, at Pottanikkadu Eranamkulam. The Federation runs a Home for destitute blind at Keezhuparamp Malappuram with total private aid.
