The S.G.S. College Committee started S.G.S. College on 1st August 1968 with the noble aim of imparting the benefits of higher education to the poor and down-trodden sections of the society in and around Jaggayyapet in this backward area of West Krishna of Krishna District. It is situated 77 kms. away from Vijayawada on NH 65 (9) towards Hyderabad. Jaggayyapet with its rural surroundings is a historically prominent place, for it was a Buddhist Centre of learning and culture in the past. The College was started to meet the educational needs of this area with B.A, B.Com and P.U.C (Pre-University Course) courses with an initial strength of 105 students. The long-cherished dream of founding a college in this backward area was realized with the generous donation of land of about 15acres by a philanthrophic agriculturist of the village of BALUSUPADU, Sri Gentela Ranga Rao. In order to show the gratitude to the principal donor, the committee named the college after his wife, SRIMATHI GENTELA SAKUNTALAMMA and afterwards the college came to be known as Smt. Gentela Sakuntalamma College (S.G.S. College). The establishment of the college indeed opened a new chapter in the history of the region.

Laboratories
The College All the science labs are renovated in tune with modern specifications and standards, They are well-furnished with necessary instruments and equipment, proper lighting, and wash points. To ensure safety, labs of the Department of Chemistry are fitted with fire extinguishers, exhaust fans, first aid boxes, etc. There are a total of 22 laboratories: Mathematics-1, Physics: U.G.-3; P.G.-3, Electronics-1, Chemistry UG-3; P.G.-3, Botany-2, Zoology-3, English Lab-1, Computer-1 and M.Com. (Retail Marketing)-1.
Library
The college has a central library with more than 40,000 books with a separate reference section and separate journal section which takes care of the research requirements of both faculty and students. The library has an internet facility. It has subscribed to the annual premium membership of INFLIBNET and thus nearly 75% of the library activities have come into the fold of automation.
I.T Infrastructure
The college has an excellent IT Infrastructure facility for the students. Both faculty and students are provided with a BSNL BroadBand internet service with a 2 Mbps speed. A separate Network Resource Centre is established with 10 systems and is made available during the working hours of the college.
Girls Hostel
The college has constructed a hostel for women. It can accommodate about 100 students. As the funds received from the government are insufficient, it is being run with the support of the college management, some philanthropists, and like-minded staff of the college. Several other students stay in the hostels run by the social welfare departments. All the hostels are furnished with sufficient facilities.
Sports
The college has about 10 acres of playground. The college provides requisite paraphernalia to organize indoor and outdoor games. Recently, the college has inaugurated an indoor stadium constructed with UGC funds, There are provisions for cricket, badminton, kabaddi, cocoa, long jump, high jump, and several track events.
Gym
The College also has a gym equipped with the required instruments worth 15 lakhs encouraging students to maintain their physical fitness.
Medical/Hospital
The institution has a Health Centre. There is a Government General Hospital in the town just 2 kilometers away from the college. In case of an emergency, the students/faculty can be taken to Govt. General Hospital. However, the college conducts periodic general medical checkups for students. Apart from regular checkups, medical camps are conducted on the campus now and then.
Cafeteria
The College canteen located in the college provides nutritious and healthy food for a fair price. The safety and hygiene of the canteen are monitored at regular intervals.
Parking Facility
The college has a Parking facility for staff vehicles. Separate parking sheds for men and women students.
Guest Room/Waiting Room
The College has an Air-conditioned, well-furnished guest room with an attached toilet facility.

The college has a good networking for the alumni association.
Auditorium
The college has the facility of Conference Hall with a seating capacity of 250. An LCD projector with the screen is also installed to facilitate ICT-enabled teaching. The latest Public Address System and advanced audio and video equipment are provided to make discussions, meetings, workshops, conferences, and seminars effective and fruit-bearing.
Classrooms
The college is housed in a very serene and conducive ambiance. The classrooms are spacious and provide enough aeration. The college management provides the required funds for the establishment and maintenance of the infrastructure. A relaxed mind is an essential factor for attaining proper concentration and diligence. There are separate blocks for science, Arts, and commerce for conducting classwork. There are more than 30 classrooms with the required furniture.
