J. D. Birla Institute (JDBI) was established in 1962 and has completed quite fifty years in commission to teaching. Jawahari Devi Birla Institute of Home Science and it crammed a way felt gap within the scientific education of young ladies from Calcutta’s conservative families.

A Department of Commerce was value-added in 1997 and in tune with the shifting zeitgeist; another field was started in 2002 to deal with the co-educational Department of Management. At this point, the name of the establishment was simplified to J. D. Birla Institute. within the year 2009, four new professionally familiarized under-graduate B.Sc courses (Food Science & Nutrition Management; Textile Science, wear & Fashion Studies; Interior coming up with and Human Development) was introduced except for 2 new post-graduate M.Sc courses (Food & Nutrition and Textiles & Clothing) in 2009. M.Com was introduced and therefore the Home Science Programme out of print in 2013.
