Why Government Dental College?

As far back as the beginning of Medical College, Kottayam about 40 years back a Dental Department was joined to it. In any case, later it was understood that the idea of work that was under taken chiefly was Oral Surgical. Thus in 1992 the Dental Department was re-assigned as Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This office is viewed as the referral place for minor and major maxillofacial careful instances of Central Kerala, containing Kottayam, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam and Alappuzha areas.

While offering quality Oral and Maxillofacial careful administrations, the individuals of Central Kerala were not given other particular dental treatment in government area in Central Kerala. They needed to approach private dental experts or look for treatment either in Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode Dental College. Consequently it was just sensible that offices for particular dental treatment be made accessible to the individuals of Central Kerala through the foundation of a Dental College appended to Medical College, Kottayam.

Around then in the administration division, there were just two Dental Colleges in the state one at Thiruvananthapuram and the other at Kozhikode with a yearly admission of forty understudies in every school. Henceforth understudies looking for confirmation for BDS course need to rely upon private establishments in the neighboring states. Consequently, the need for a Dental College at Kottayam joined to the Medical College, was proposed by many.

It was distinctly in 1998 December a couple of months after Dr.P.Chandramohan (Prof.& Head of Cardio Thoracic Surgery) accepted charge as the Superintendent of Medical College Hospital Kottayam, that a considerable move was made toward this path. The thought happened a cerebrum wave to Dr.Chandramohan to exhibit the matter of another Dental College before the Hospital Development Society. Dr.Chandramohan endowed Dr.George Varghese, HOD, Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to draft a definite undertaking report inside a fortnight to exhibit before the HDC meeting to be held in the third seven day stretch of January 1999.

The HDC meeting held under the Chairmanship of the District Collector of Kottayam Sri.Biswanath Sinha IAS, collectively consented to present the issue before the legislature so it might be incorporated into the spending limit. Almost at a similar period the College Committee of Management likewise consented to prescribe the beginning of the new Dental College and seek after the issue with the administration.

The requirement for the organization was more than once brought to the notice of the legislature by the general population and political pioneers of Kottayam. Dr.B.Ekbal (in the past Prof and HOD of Neuro Surgery) as Member of Planning Board of Kerala assumed a significant job in distributing adequate assets for the Kottayam Dental College in the 2000 spending plan . At long last, the fantasy worked out in March 2000 when Sri. Sivadasa Menon, Hon'ble Finance Minister exhibited the Kerala State Budget. A measure of Rs.10 Lakhs was incorporated for beginning another Dental College at Kottayam with a yearly admission of 40 understudies for BDS course. This was an extraordinary day of cheer for the individuals of Central Kerala.

The Government of Kerala agreed authoritative assent for the foundation of the Kottayam Dental College vide G.O.(MS) No.209/2000/H& FWD dated 7-8-2000. The present showing division , Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery appended to Medical College, Kottayam and the structure cleared by the pre clinical branches of Medical College Kottayam were chosen to be used for the Dental College. Dr.K.George Varghese, HOD, Dept of Oral and Maxillofacial medical procedure, Medical College Kottayam was assigned as the Special Officer.
