Kodungallur Kunjikuttan Thampuran, who later became famous as Kerala Vyasan for rendering the inimitable translation of the Mahabharata into Malayalam, was born on 4 Kanni 1040 of the Malayalam era (1865 CE) in Chirakkal Kovilakam, Kodungallur. Although his original name was Rama Varma, he became famous throughout Kerala and other places due to his nickname 'Kunjikuttan'. He carried out his first studies informally at the palace itself.
