On 19th July 1973 North Eastern Hill University was came into existence by an Act of Parliament. The jurisdiction of NEHU ceased over Nagaland with the establishment of the Nagaland University on 6th September 1994. The jurisdiction of NEHU over Mizoram also ceased from June, 2001 with the establishment of the Mizoram University. Including eight professional colleges fifty-three undergraduate colleges affiliated to the University at present. The University Central Library has a collection of close to 2,00,000 books, 38,000 bound periodicals. After leaving the University our students have done well in life. They get well paid jobs in Central Civil Services, Banking Services and into the University System. By both national and foreign organisations many have been taken into the Several have been awarded scholarships and fellowships. NEHU has matured into an institution in a short span of about 30 years with a serious academic.

* Students who are willing to apply for the Ph.D. study program at the North-Eastern Hill University must have passed their Master's course Degree in a relevant field from a recognized institution or university.
* Students have at least 55% of marks scores in their previous education and 50% marks scored for the reserved category.
* Also, the university reserves 50% of the seats for the reserved category (SC/ ST candidates), whereas, 50% of the seats for the open category.

Before filling up the Ph.D. Course application form, students need to prepare a 200 words write-up, which explains their reason as to why they are willing to apply for that particular study program and their further intention or plans of the study or research in the subject. After writing it, paste the write-up into the box that will be available in the online application form.
