The Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) was at first set up as Tezpur Lunatic Asylum under the British Government in April, 1876. 

In 1922 the medical clinic was rechristened as Tezpur Mental Hospital. With the advancement in the field of psychiatry over the globe, steps were additionally taken to build up this emergency clinic with present day offices. Real development exercises were begun in 1926. A private firm, "Zardine Menezes Co.," was procured from Calcutta for undertaking the upgradation works. After the Independence, the clinic was brought under the Government of Assam. In 1949, Late Dr. N. C. Bordoloi turned into the Superintendent of the emergency clinic. In 1999 the Institute was given over toward the North Eastern Council (NEC). Being the chief tertiary consideration mental foundation in the NE locale, the emergency clinic was moved up to a provincial establishment with the goal of giving better emotional wellness care and creating labor in the area. The Institute was from that point rechristened as "Lokopriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health." 

On June 1, 2007, the Institute was taken over by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
