Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women was set up in the year 1965, in the sanctuary city, Madurai, by the Government of Tamil Nadu in a rambling grounds of 20 sections of land to satisfy the requirement for upliftment of ladies, in and around Madurai with 320 understudies and 13 instructing and 13 non-showing staff individuals. The College has been moved up to Grade-I status, and the College has been put as one among the 14 Grade-I universities in the territory of Tamil Nadu. 

The self-governing status was given on 6 th October 1998 and the establishment keeps on spreading its branches far and wide, yielding a rich reap of scholastic brilliance. The College has developed in status, having on its rolls, 3639 understudies, 150 instructing and 43 non-showing staff, at present. There are 13 Under Graduate and seven Post Graduate courses offered now. Our College is one among the six Government Colleges where the Satellite Interactive Remote Terminal has been Installed.The College was begun by the legislature of TamilNadu with the selective point of the upliftment of the ladies of Madurai.In 1965 the College had just pre-college courses with 320 understudies. There were 13 educating and 13 non-instructing staff.In the following scholastic year, that is, 1966-67 college class in Tamil writing, Economics and Mathematics were begun.
